A step-by-step guide on how to grow potatoes:

1. Selecting Seed Potatoes:

Purchase certified disease-free seed potatoes from a garden center or online. Choose varieties suited to your climate and preference for flavor and texture.

2. Preparing Seed Potatoes:

Before planting, cut seed potatoes into pieces containing at least one eye each. Allow the cut pieces to cure in a cool, dry place for a few days to form a protective callus.

3. Preparing the Soil:

Potatoes prefer loose, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH (around 5.8-6.5). Prepare the planting bed by loosening the soil to a depth of about 8-10 inches and incorporating organic matter such as compost or aged manure.

4. Planting:

Plant seed potatoes in trenches or individual holes about 4-6 inches deep and 12-18 inches apart. Place the seed potatoes cut side down with the eyes facing upward.

5. Hilling:

As the potato plants grow and reach a height of 6-8 inches, mound soil around the stems to cover them halfway. Repeat this process every few weeks to encourage the development of more potatoes and protect them from sunlight, which can cause them to turn green and become toxic.

6. Watering:

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the tuber formation stage. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.

7. Fertilizing:

Potatoes are heavy feeders, so side-dress them with a balanced fertilizer or compost when the plants are about 6 inches tall and again when they start flowering.

8. Pest and Disease Management:

Monitor your potato plants regularly for signs of pests such as potato beetles, aphids, and wireworms. Practice crop rotation and remove any affected plants to prevent the spread of diseases like late blight.

9. Harvesting:

Potatoes can be harvested when the plants have flowered and the tops start to yellow and die back. Carefully dig around the plants with a garden fork to unearth the tubers. Allow them to cure in a cool, dark place for a couple of weeks before storing them in a cool, dry location.
